Saskatchewan’s new child care funding model now in effect as providers voice concerns

As of July 1, 2026, Saskatchewan pays the monthly Parent Fee Reduction Grant — the funding that bridges the gap between $10-a-day parent fees and the actual cost of care — only once per licensed space, ending the previous practice where centres could receive partial grants for part-time or casual children sharing a single spot. Providers say the change hits families with non-traditional schedules hardest: one Rocanville director told a news conference her centre, licensed for 45 spaces, actually serves 82 families a year, and it can no longer receive grant funding for those above its licensed count. The Opposition is calling on the province to reverse the changes, while the government says they are designed to stabilize, protect, and sustain the child care system as it shifts from rapid expansion to sustainability. For educators and leaders across the sector, this is an important development to watch as other provinces weigh similar sustainability measures.
