Following a Supreme Court ruling, Quebec says it will prioritize long-term residents for subsidized child care spots – a significant policy development in the province that pioneered low-fee care. Demand continues to outpace supply: 30,688 children were on the waiting list for early childhood educational services as of May 31, 2025, and the province’s latest budget earmarks the conversion of 5,000 non-subsidized spots into subsidized ones.
