The Government of Canada has launched a new initiative to support the early childhood educator workforce, investing up to $5.4 million until March 31, 2027 through the Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program. Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu announced the funding in Gatineau on August 10, 2026.

The work will update the National Occupational Standards for ECEs, improve labour market information for the sector, and modernize the workforce tools used in training and hiring. Three organizations are delivering it together: Colleges and Institutes Canada, the Canadian Child Care Federation, and l’Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne.

Worth watching if you hire, mentor or train educators. Refreshed occupational standards eventually work their way into job descriptions, post-secondary programs and certification conversations in every province, so this is the quiet groundwork behind a lot of later change.
