The Auditor General of Canada’s performance audit of the Canada-wide system found real progress on affordability: average out-of-pocket fees for regulated spaces receiving federal funding fell to about $16.50 per day as of March 2024. The audit also flagged risk on access – just over 112,000 of the targeted 250,000 new spaces were created in the first three years – and called for stronger data on whether expansion is reaching diverse and vulnerable families.
